09:58 pm - Movie Review
Tonight was supposed to be Chick Flick night with Amy. We had planned to see Enchanted, but the 7pm show was canceled for some reason. Plan B was put into action and we purchased tickets to see The Great Debaters. I guess it was a sneak preview for AMEX holders, and we both had AMEX cards.
I have only one word ... WOW!!! This is one of the best films I've seen. If Denzel does not win best actor AND best director I'll be very disappointed. And Nate Parker was AMAZING in his portrayal of Henry Lowe. The film made us laugh and cry. I was angry and embarrassed by the actions of my ancestors and PROUD of those who stood up to them to change the world for the better. I can't recall a film, since seeing Karate Kid in the theater many moons ago, where the audience applauded and stood in an ovation when the credits rolled.
It was a unique situation for us to see this film, as we were probably 2 of possibly 20 white people in the theater. There were points in the film where I wanted to stand up and apologize for my race. We were among the first to cheer when ignorance and arrogance were put in their place. And I wept openly at the scenes where that same ignorance that was so vividly reenacted. I wish I could say that it was Hollywood dramatizing the past for ratings, but sadly I know these things actually occurred. Even more sad is the fact that it still happens.
I can't recommend this film enough. See it.

I'm *POSITIVE* you already know about this, but I saw the preview for it while we were in NY seeing Beowulf in IMAX 3D, but you REALLY NEED TO SEE U2 3D when it is release in January. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0892375/
In the preview I felt like I could reach out and touch them.
10:17 am - Please help the Red Cross support wounded soldiers this holiday season
Anyone in the DC area available this Saturday to help???
Sent: Wed Dec 19 17:51:52 2007
Subject: Please help the Red Cross support wounded soldiers this holiday season
Friends and colleagues: This is a last minute appeal to ask you to consider volunteering this Saturday December 22 from 9 AM-12 PM at the American Red Cross Headquarters cafeteria to help the Red Cross sort holiday cards. These cards have been sent from all over America and will be delivered to our wounded troops recovering at military hospitals.
We have over 80,000 cards left to be reviewed and with many of our volunteers traveling out of town or otherwise committed; staff here at National HQ are recruiting our friends and colleagues to help process these cards in time for Christmas.
Please see the Fox News story link and the AP article below for more background.
If you are wondering who else is on the bcc distribution, it consists of people I have worked with or socialized with this year in the Washington area, so it’s a safe bet any friends or co-workers we have in common received this email as well.
I’m counting on the holiday spirit, appreciation for our wounded troops and yes… peer pressure… to help accomplish our goal.
Again this Saturday 9 AM-12 PM and if you can only give an hour; that’s great as well. Refreshments will be served.
We are located at 2025 E Street, NW Washington, DC and there is plenty of street parking on Saturday mornings on E Street.
Please consider stopping by, and if you are unavailable, pass this message along to someone who may be free.
RSVP by replying to this email or if you have any questions my phone number is below.
Thank you and happy holidays.

01:32 pm - Holiday Card Address Bandwagon
I may be kidding myself, but considering I purchased a buttload of cards, I hope to actually send cards this year. I just need to find time to sit and write the holiday letter ... God knows this year has been chalk full of news. Anyway, I'm sure my address book is out of date for some and totally incomplete on others. So, following in the footsteps of others before me, if you know me personnally, think we are friendly enough to recieve a card, and feel inclined to provide your info, please do so. Comments are screened to protect privacy. If you need my new info, comment.

08:29 am - California Peeps - check in
Please check in and let me know you are alright. My family was evacuated yesterday. I'm worried. Thoughts and prayers go out to all. I remember all too clearly how terrifying the fires were in 2003.

01:10 pm - The Good and the Bad
I need a better Autumn icon.
Another season has drawn to conclusion. I find it hard to believe it is over. Having only made it out 4 days and the weather being so warm for closing is filling me with disbelief. Alas, I know it to be truth.
I had a good weekend and I had a bad weekend. I was very ill. I had a bad reaction to a flu shot earlier in the week which was causing me to be very dizzy and pretty nauseous. I ended up sitting or lying down behind Cindie's booth for a good portion of both days. :( I even considered missing Pub Sing, but I knew that really wasn’t an option for me. I'm VERY glad I didn't.
I was reminded again why Pub Sing is MY favorite part of any faire day at MDRF. The magic that my dear friend Mr. Shaw creates up on that stage ... well, I can only say I wish there was a way to bottle the feeling. I laughed. I cried. I sang. I hugged. I was hugged. I held hands with dear friends. My heart ached with thoughts of those no longer here to hold hands with. I smiled from memories. I let the warmth that is Pub Sing wash over me. I felt surrounded by love of good friends. Tim, thank you for doing what you do so well. I'll never find the words to truly express how much those memories mean to me. Thank you to all the musicians and actors. Special shout out to Mr. Fairbanks ... Darcy, you were spot on with both numbers. BEAUTIFUL. Really.
I saw lots of people this weekend. I also missed seeing quite a few people. I successfully avoided the few I had no desire to see. If I walked by you in a haze, I apologize. Thank you to those who did stop me to say hello. I was nice to see so many familiar faces.
So, until we meet again in Revel Grove, or on other paths, Adieu.

09:00 pm - God Speed, Mary
For those so inclined to say a prayer, light a candle, or send healing thoughts ... please do so for Mary Kollus and her family. Mary is my sister's mother-in-law. Dad phoned to say she passed away. Cancer. It was undetected until the end of September. She thought she had a virus. There is a lot to be said for the will of human beings. Mary wanted so badly to see Melinda and Johnny get married. She was sick for weeks before the wedding, she even missed the rehearsal dinner, but pulled it together for the main event. Once diagnosed the doctors said they couldn't understand how she could even have been functioning at the wedding, but she was. She willed herself to make it through that wedding.
My heart aches for my Sissy. She loved Mary as a second Mom. Mary always welcomed her with open arms, even during those times when Mel and Johnny were not together. Lizzy is only 19 ... too young to be without a Mom. Our families grieve, yet pull together to give each other what strength we can.
This sucks. :(

04:17 pm - Is it just me ....
Or do these pictures from the Carrie/Big wedding scene shoot in NYC scare everyone?
It looks like a freak-show circus wedding. I'm disappointed.
Someone please give Ms. Parker a sandwich, STAT!

01:03 pm - The weekend
I admire those of you that are getting out long weekend recaps. I won't. Even my fingers hurt today. And I know, without a doubt, I'd forget something or someone. Suffice to say the weekend had it high and low points. Overall it had more good than bad, so I can't complain. Let me see if I can do the top ten:
10) Walking on the boardwalk with my love. He didn't take to faire as I had hoped, but I still enjoyed being there with him and introducing him to those that have not yet had the opportunity to meet him.
9) The smile on Miss Aemelia's face when she saw her Auntie Deb.
8) Going on the slide with Princess Sarah.
7) The quiet moment on Saturday when a butterfly stopped to say good morning.
6) A moment shared with a dear friend.
5) Tim Shaw winning the Pub Sing raffle and singing the Itsy Bitsy Spider ... then Blowed and Torn.
4) The Corsairs ... I love them. I caught 6 of their 8 sets and received LOTS of hugs.
3) Jeffrey ... just as Handsome as ever.
2) Matt ... absent far too long from Revel Grove. It was so good to see Ensign Stubbs. Unfortunately the video camera ran out of juice mid-way through Blow the Man Down.
1) Damon ... the return of Louis the Moor. When he finished Sailor's Prayer the cheering was so loud I thought the roof of the White Hart might cave in.
Special thanks to Michele for use of the video camera. I may not have gotten Pub Sing in its entirety, but I got some good stuff during the day.

08:34 am - Fall Glorious FALL
I know, I know ... Autumn doesn't "officially" begin for a few more days, but OMG how I love waking up and the air is CRISP. I love that word, crisp. It was perfect snuggling weather this morning. Fortunately I had The Boy AND my precious kitty Sasha there to oblige. I cheated - I'm broke out the boots a few days early ... a fashion no no, but I couldn't resist.
Last night I went to Reston to pick up the garb for this weekend and spent a few hours with the faire boxes tripping down memory lane. Wow, I have accumulated A LOT of stuff. I can't believe how many faire favors I found scattered throughout the boxes. I spent a few moments with each item recalling the memories associated with them ... good times, and bad, but all important. To quote the Grateful Dead, what a long, strange trip it's been. :)
HAPPY FALL!! (a little early)

11:15 am - Okay, I admit it ...
This morning when I heard the weekend weather forecast, the first pangs of missing the woods hit. I confess I got a little homesick for Revel Grove. It sounds like it is going to be perfect faire weather this weekend. I pray it holds until next weekend. ,

09:12 pm - Manicure Recommendation
Most of you gals out there understand the difficult search to find a really good manicurist/pedicurist. I've been back in Northern Virginia for over two years and have tried numerous location until I *finally* found a *REALLY* good one. I've been going to Sunny for about 3 months now and my nails have never looked better. In 3 months I have only had one incident of one of my acrylic nails lifting. She even has me to the point where she is just reinforcing my natural nails instead of using tips. AND she gives amazing spa pedicures.
Sunny just opened her own shop in the Tysons Corner area, on Gallows Road at the intersection of Gallows and Electric Avenue. Information (including a coupon) behind the cut ...
